Promoting Better Oral Health Through Education, Prevention, and Community Wellness
The Association of Women in Ministry International (AWMI) is committed to improving the health and well-being of underserved individuals through community education and outreach.
In 2025, AWMI launched the Healthy Gums & Mouth Initiative, a free oral health education program designed to serve low-income families, youth, and older adults.
The initiative was led by Dr. Esther Chrysostome, a dentist from Haiti, who generously shared her professional expertise by providing practical, culturally responsive education on maintaining healthy teeth and gums.
Practical, culturally responsive teaching on caring for teeth and gums at every stage of life.
Hands-on demonstrations and free hygiene kits that turn knowledge into daily habits.
Reaching low-income families, youth, and older adults who face barriers to dental care.

A dentist from Haiti, Dr. Chrysostome generously volunteered her professional expertise to lead the initiative, meeting participants where they are with clear, practical guidance they can act on right away.
Her sessions combined teaching with live demonstration - showing participants exactly how to brush and floss correctly using dental models, and answering questions about treatments many had never had the chance to ask a dentist about.
Participants received education on the essentials of lifelong oral health.
The importance of daily oral hygiene
Proper brushing and flossing techniques
Preventing gum disease and tooth decay
Caring for teeth throughout every stage of life
Understanding orthodontic treatment (braces)
Denture options and proper care
Dental implant education and available treatment options
The connection between oral health and overall wellness
As part of the workshop, every participant received a complimentary oral hygiene kit containing:
Hands-on demonstrations were also provided to teach participants the correct techniques for brushing and flossing, empowering them with practical skills they could immediately use at home.

Building on the success of last year's program, AWMI is excited to relaunch the Healthy Gums & Mouth Initiative as a one day workshop in February 2027.
The upcoming program will continue our mission of providing accessible oral health education, practical resources, and community support to individuals and families who may face barriers to dental health information and preventive care.
Through partnerships with healthcare professionals and community leaders, AWMI remains dedicated to promoting healthier smiles, improving quality of life, and encouraging lifelong healthy habits throughout our communities.
